I Finally Finished My Gallery Wall: The Full Reveal

A few months ago I wrote about how I wasn't sure what my office gallery wall should look like. Well, it's finally done, and I could not be happier with how it turned out.

Before: Moving Everything Out and Painting the Walls

This room is actually my dining room. I am using it as my office and as the creative space for my YouTube channel and the rest of my lifestyle content, so it needed to work for that, not just look nice for a day.

Before any of the fun part happened, I had to move every single piece of furniture out of the room, then paint. The walls used to be a flat gray, and it took three coats of paint to fully cover it. I used Polar Bear, picked up at Home Depot. Between moving everything out, painting, and moving it all back in, the whole project took about three days.

Planning the Layout Before Hanging Anything

Once the walls were painted and everything was back in the room, I still was not ready to start putting holes in the wall. I actually laid two different layouts out on the floor first, just to get a feel for the spacing and the mix before committing to anything.

A Few Lessons From Actually Doing This

When I wrote the first post about this project, I talked about six things I wanted to keep in mind. A collected feel instead of a shopped in one day feel. Mixing frames. Including one statement piece. Skipping perfect symmetry. Mixing types of art. And letting the wall feel like part of the room, not just something hung on a blank wall.

Looking at the finished wall now, all six really did show up. The frames are a genuine mix, gold bamboo trim next to simple black, a couple of ornate vintage finds thrown in. The round wood mirror ended up being exactly the kind of statement piece I was talking about. Nothing lines up in a perfect grid, and the art itself is just as mixed, illustrations, photography, a few unexpected pieces. And with the credenza, the vases, and the pampas grass styled right underneath it, the wall does not feel like it is just floating on a blank spot. It feels like part of the whole room.

The actual hanging did not go perfectly, and I think that is worth saying. I started out trying to use the adhesive strips, the kind that stick right onto the back of a frame and onto the wall, since I did not want a bunch of extra holes. That did not work for most of these frames, they turned out to be heavier than I expected, so I ended up switching to nails after all.

I also broke the glass on one of the frames while I was hanging everything. Not exactly part of the plan, but it happens. If you are taking on a gallery wall of your own, plan for a little trial and error. It is part of the process.
