To fulfill this mandate, state-licensed MLOs are required to undertake 20 hours of education approved by the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), which is the official record system used by all state agencies. The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) has the same basic requirements to become a mortgage loan originator in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Some states have additional educational requirements, but most of the education is finished when the 20-Hour Mortgage Loan Originator course is complete.
